Strider PREBike Founder Ryan McFarland interviewed on SDPB

Friday, June 25th, 2010

I was interviewed on South Dakota Public Broadcasting last week. We got quite involved in discussing the development of the Strider and how important it is to learn balance before pedaling for a natural progression into riding a pedal bike. Enjoy!

Teach Your Toddler To Ride – Our New Father’s Day Tradition

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

We want to create a new father’s day tradition. Here’s a press release we’ve put out this week:

‘Teach Your Toddler To Ride’ This Father’s Day – And You’ll Both Remember the Experience a Lifetime

Toddlers across the country will mark Father’s Day by riding along with dad on their very first bike ride. The “Teach Your Toddler to Ride” association with Father’s Day is the brainchild of outdoor recreation enthusiast Ryan McFarland, father of two and founder of Strider Sports International, Inc.

Rapid City, SD June 15, 2010 — Father’s Day 2010 inaugurates the first annual “Teach Your Toddler To Ride” celebration, in which dads across the country will join their toddlers on their very first bike ride.

Successful dads and their kids are invited to post photos or videos of their father-son and father-daughter bike adventures at http://www.facebook.com/StriderPREbike. (Just click the “Like” button and then upload to share.)

The goal of the “Teach Your Toddler To Ride” national event is to cement the annual celebration of fatherhood into the lifetime memories of dads and kids alike. Along the path, families can establish an annual tradition of fun, active, outdoor father/child activities on this special day.

Few childhood events are as momentous as when a boy or girl is able to take control of a bike for the very first time. Almost all of us remember when and where we accomplished this early right of passage.

The “Teach Your Toddler to Ride” association with Father’s Day is the brainchild of outdoor recreation enthusiast Ryan McFarland, father of two and founder of Strider Sports International, Inc.

McFarland, whose training bike company receives dozens of testimonials each month from beaming fathers reporting on their toddlers’ first solo ride, reasoned that it makes perfect sense to facilitate and coordinate the joyous experience on behalf of dad’s all across the country.

“What did you do on Father’s Day 2005?” McFarland muses. “Most of us have no recollection.”

But, McFarland observes, ask proud Dads about their toddlers’ first time gliding off on a bike under their own power, and the fathers will surprise you with their clear recollections. Indeed, as McFarland well knows, YouTube is overflowing with home videos of cheering, crowing, whistling and clapping dads as their toddlers head off along their first sidewalk or bike trail.

Each year, thousands of American toddlers launch their first solo bike ride on McFarland’s Strider PREbike, a light-weight, pedal-free training bike that he invented to empower his then 2 ½ year old son, Bode, to ride along with him.

Strider PREbikes have become a quiet rage among parents of toddlers, as The Associated Press noted in a feature article earlier this month. What makes Strider PREbikes so popular is that they are durable, virtually maintenance free, and designed for the shorter leg-lengths and less-developed muscle power of toddlers. Many children are able to master the balance and coordination necessary to propel a Strider PREbike at 18 months of age!

“Why skip a Father’s Day family bike ride because you have toddlers or settle for towing your kids along in bike caddies when they can coast right along with you and your older children on their own PREbike?” McFarland asks.

McFarland says he personally has witnessed hundreds of toddlers setting off on their first family bicycle outing and he can’t really say who is more thrilled, the kids or their parents.

Most tots take to Strider PREbikes right out of the box. While some toddlers might move haltingly the first couple of days, usually within three or four days they are gliding along. One Strider PREbike enthusiast interviewed by The Associated Press, Phil Busching, described how his youngest son began on one of McFarland’s PREbikes when he was still 18 months old. “It was an immediate hit,” Busching said. “He was coasting it 30 feet within two weeks.”

Strider PREbikes are a breeze to assemble. They weigh only 7 pounds and are available directly from Strider Sports (http://www.stridersports.com/running-bikes/) as well as a nationwide network of dealers and bike shops.

If delighted Dads do get their toddlers started this Father’s Day on their first solo ride along, what will fathers do for an encore next year?

McFarland observes that children who develop the necessary balance and coordination skills on his PREbikes have demonstrated an amazing ability to transition to two-wheel pedal bikes at surprisingly early ages – well ahead of kids who rely initially on training wheels or tricycles.

“The formula is simple,” McFarland says. “It’s PREbike with your kids for Father’s Day 2010 and they’ll likely be ready to solo on a two-wheel pedal bike for Father’s Day 2011.”

In both instances, McFarland promises, the experience will be unforgettable and the start of a cherished new American family tradition.

Learning to Ride a Bike times 4 Girls!

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

We heard from Paul in Woodbridge, Connecticut. He and his wife have 4 girls age 5 and under! The 3-year-old rides about 60% on her Strider and 40% on her pedal bike, although she still prefers the Strider. Paul says, “The 21-month-old cries if she doesn’t see her Strider bike in the car when we go places :)

Here’s the comment they sent in…

I am sure you have heard this before, but every parent should get one of these bikes for their kids :) . i have 4 kids under 5 years old. they started using the strider bikes as soon as their legs were long enough to touch the ground over the strider seat (around 18 months or so). they had the balance ride a pedal bike by the age of three because of the strider bike. they actually enjoy riding the strider more than the pedal bike up to about 5 (my oldest always grabs her pedal bike now before the strider). My 3 1/2 year old won;t let me go anywhere unless i have her strider bike and pedal bike in the car. she loves them both. awesome product. my 20 month old can coast 50 feet with her feet up on the strider already :) . she won;t let anyone ride “her” strider either ;) .

Team Strider again at Relay for Life in Rapid City

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

This Friday is the Annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event at Sioux Park.  We support this event each year with a corporate donation of $20 for every child on a Strider that shows up to make a lap around the track… (with a minimum contribution of $500).  We’d like to see as many Strider riders there as possible.  We will meet at the Sioux Park running track at 7pm.  The official Team Strider lap is at 7:15 and then kids can continue to ride laps following that.  This is a free event, supporting a great cause.  Hope you can make it.

Here’s a look at the kids in last year’s event:

Strider Featured by Associated Press

We were featured on Monday by AP writer Dave Kolpack on a story about the benefits of Strider PREBikes.

Here’s an excerpt from one of the dozens of media sites that picked up the story…

Associated Press – June 6, 2010 1:55 PM ET

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – A South Dakota man says his training bike for kids is catching on around the world.

Ryan McFarland of Rapid City makes Strider bikes. The bike has no pedals; instead, riders propel themselves with their feet while sitting down, like a scooter with a saddle.

McFarland says he sold more than 20,000 bikes last year and expects orders to triple this year. He says he’s expanding his business and recently hired people to handle international sales.

McFarland says the Strider does a better job of teaching young kids to balance and steer than training wheels or tricycles.

Kent Jumps and Crashes Strider PREbikeTodd Big Air on Strider PREbike

You knew it had to happen sooner or later.  These bikes are just too cool to let the little kiddies have all the fun.  This is the Strider Sports staff (adults!) aboard some mildly modified Strider PREbike balance bikes running some of the downhill mountain bike trails on M Hill in Rapid City, SD.  We upgraded to the heavy duty wheels available in our online store and donned all of our motocross gear for a crazy run down the mountain.  Definitely shows how durable our frame is when a bunch of grown men can come down through this rough terrain and even land some jumps on the footrests! If you’re wondering what company is singularly devoted to building the best toddler balance bike on the planet, look no further. Changing the way the world learns to ride a bike is our mission and the Strider PREbike is our passion! Enjoy the video…

This was SO much fun that we decided to announce a race for the 2011 Black Hills Fat Tire Festival…  the inaugural Strider Cup Downhill!  Hold on to your helmets… $1,000 to Win … PLUS payout down through the field.  This is sure to be a crazy event!  Rules will be available in January 2011 on both the www.stridersports.com and on www.bhfattirefestival.com website.  Oh, the fun we’re gonna have!  :-)

When we announced this during this year’s Festival, everybody was so excited that we threw together an impromptu Strider Downhill Exhibition… it was the talk of the festival!  We’ll have photos and video posted by the end of the week… check back later for some great stuff!  :-)
